Paragliding Sites

TABLE MOUNTAIN
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
1000m Advanced SW, W, NE (Light SE) 15 -20 km's
Table Mountain is not only the most sought-after but also the highest launch site in Cape Town, but with its rapid changing wind directions it is not often flown. For this reason special licenses are required to appreciate the stunning views of the city and Western seaboard beaches. There are three launch sites. The Gully(W), overlooking Clifton & Camps Bay, The Front Face (NW), overlooking the city center and Maclear's Beacon (Light SE), facing the southern suburbs and Constantia. Due to licence requirements it is not suitable for Tandem Paragliding.
LION'S HEAD
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
350m Basic License SW, W 15 -20 km's
Probably the most frequently flown site in the Cape Peninsula during summer, a (SW) sea breeze works best. Thermic action can be relatively active around midday giving enough rise for short Cross-Country flights to Table Mountain and down the Twelve Apostles to Hout Bay (8kms).
SIGNAL HILL BENCH
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
250m Advanced light NW, W) 10 -15 km's
Signal Hill overlooking Sea Point and Green Point , but crossings to Lion's Head, Table Mountain and The Twelve Apostles are possible for experienced pilots. Rapidly changing weather conditions and no immediate landing area below the ridge gives this site an advanced licence rating. A slope landing or glide across to Green Point might have to be attempted if you sink out, be careful as this might be tricky.
HERMANUS
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
250m Basic SE, S, SSW 15 -20 km's
Only 1 ½ hours from Cape Town, Hermanus, famous for the migration of Southern Right Whales into Walker Bay also has Rotary Way where the Take off site is. Smooth ridge soaring along the 8km ridge is made possible by gentle sea breezes. Thermals can occur here and moderate Cross-Country flights are possible.
FRANSCHHOEK
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
1000m Basic light NW - SW 10 -15 km's
Franschhoek is one of the premier wine-growing regions of the Cape. At the end of a long valley you will find a pass that is only flyable in light winds. Incredible views of the peaks dazzle you as you ride the thermals. Round the day off with a tasty meal and great wine in the quaint little town of Franschhoek below.
PORTERVILLE
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
350m Basic SW, S, SWW 10 -25 km's
In terms of Hard Core, this is the site you want to fly if you are interested in doing long distances! Most of the South African Paragliding & Hang-gliding championships and the "All African Cup" were held here. The Dasklip Pass take off site is substantially large, Wind conditions and directions are often variable and thermic action is powerful, flying after 11.00 am in mid summer is for the experienced pilots only.
SIR LOWRIES PASS
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
250m Basic SW, W 15 -20 km's
Sir Lowries Pass offers spectacular views of the Peninsula and Gordon's Bay and is almost as popular as Lion's Head. This long mountain range entices a pilot to challenge previous Cross-Country records. Distances in excess or 172kms to Porterville have been achieved.
GARDEN ROUTE (Map of Africa)
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
200m Advanced SE, SSE 10 -25 km's
This is the premier soaring site on the Garden Route, and is commonly known as "The Map". The views of the sweeping coastline is something that you have to see at least once in your life. Flights as far as the Holiday Inn and beyond to Swart Vlei have been achieved, but not often.
SEDGEFIELD
ALTITUDE LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IDEAL WIND DIRECTION IDEAL WIND SPEED
100m Basic SE, S 15 -20 km's
This site is a mixture of light early morning conditions to 4m/s thermals in the peak of the day, the late afternoon offers valley release. Situated between map of africa and Brenton on sea ...on the garden route.
