Shark Cage Diving Cape Town

Cape Town is well known as being one of the best destinations in the world to go Shark Cage Diving with the formidable Great White Shark.

There are daily shark diving and viewing tours off Gaansbaai, a 2 hour drive from Cape Town. The tour includes transfers from the City centre, light breakfast, approx 5 hrs at sea and a restaurant lunch.

Be prepared for an early start as collection could be as early as 5 am. Following your transfer to Gansbaai (approx 2 hours) a short boat ride brings you to "Shark Alley" a shallow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser rock, one of the worlds most recognized areas for great white shark viewing.A qualified, multi-skilled crew will ensure that you are in safe hands and ready for a memorable experience.

Getting into the cage with the sharks around, is one of the most breath-taking experiences you can experience. When feeding actively around the boat, the sharks are drawn towards the cage for your viewing pleasure. They are very curious and often come close-up to take a good look at the divers. A personal, eye-to-eye encounter with this awesome animal, is guaranteed to get the adrenaline going!

Once ready to take the dive, the diver would step onto the diving platform of the boat and slide through the opening at the top of the cage. The lid at the top is now securely closed. Once in position, the diver's head is only approx. half a meter below the surface. A freeboard of approx. 30cm allows the diver to rise to the surface and communicate with the Dive Master on the boat, while the hatch remains securely closed.

Diving takes place on a rotational basis, with two divers down at a time. Time spent in the cage depends on weather/water conditions, shark activity and eagerness of each diver, but could be up-to half an hour at a time. You do not require diving qualification to get into the cage although previous snorkeling experience will help and you do not even have to dive to enjoy this tour.

Viewing from the boat is equally spectacular, as the sharks come very close to the side of the vessel. Sharks are surface feeders by nature, ensuring spectacular surface action. From the safety of the boat, you are able to photograph your friend/s in the cage and at the same time follow the sharks as they move around the boat and cage. Be careful not to miss out on good photographs. Breaching often takes place in the high season and if you are not 100% ready, you may miss out on a good picture.
